When the International Race of Champions Series began its 13th season in 1989, Dale Earnhardt was only in his fifith year of competition on the invitational circuit. He also was waiting to collect his first IROC victory. By race Three of the IROC XIII season, held at Michigan Speedway on August 5, 1989, no one was emerging as a clear-cut favorite to win the championship. Earnhardt drew a pink Chevrolet Camaro for the race a proceeded to vie for the winners circle. Starting from the 10th spot, the Intimidator would put his pink car in front three different times during the race, leading a total of nine laps. However, he still could not catch Terry Labonte, who would win the race and vault into the lead in the championship standings. Eventually, Labonte would win the 1989 IROC championship with Earnhardt finishing fourth in the standings
