Now that he finally has fulfilled his drag racing destiny, Robert Top Gun Hight is focused this year on becoming just the second Funny Car driver in the last 22 NHRA seasons to win back-to-back championships. Since 1988, the only driver to have repeated in the highly-competitive Funny Car division is John Force, Hight's teammate, father-in-law and winner of a record 14 individual titles, 10 of them in succession (1993 through 2002

In 2009, Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club of Southern California Ford Mustang Funny car, earned his first world championship in Funny Car after barely making the 10th and last-place spot in the Countdown to 1 playoffs. Hight raced to three wins in four final rounds and became the third driver in John Force Racing history to win a world championship (John Force & Tony Pedregon). Hightwas the 10th and final driver to get into the six-race NHRA Playoff, then won three of the first five races to take an insurmountable 106-point lead over teammate Ashley Force Hood.
